Eva was born in Harney, MD (Carroll County) on December 1, 1910, to Willis Weaver Moore and Rietta May Yealy. (Her birth certificate lists her place of birth as Mt. Joy, PA – which is only 5 miles from Harney, MD). Her only sibling is a brother who was 15 years younger. She only went to school until 8th grade as she was needed on the family farm.
On her 18th birthday, December 1, 1928, she married N. LaRue Duck. They had 5 children together: Betty, Robert, Patricia, James and Franklin.
Around 1930, LaRue and Eva moved to what remains the Duck family farm to this day – the current address is on Sunset Drive in Hanover. The farm is approximately 100 acres, of which about a third is woodland. It is no longer a working farm, but is owned by LaRue’s youngest daughter. In the early years, she was the typical farm wife in that her responsibilities were to work with the horses and farming equipment, in addition to caring for the children. She was the family disciplinarian and everyone knew punishment would be harsh. She was known for her cooking especially pies and pot pie.
Her father did not trust doctors of any kind. The story goes that when she was about 15, she needed to go to the dentist. Upon learning that she needed a tooth pulled, her father reportedly told the dentist that he is never coming back here again so you might as well pull all the teeth out. He did. She was fitted for dentures that day and those are the same dentures she was buried with.
Following LaRue’s death in 1959, she remained on the farm which her children continued to help her run. On July 29, 1964, she married Clarence Arthur “Bud” Myers. His first wife, Lilly, died of cancer in 1961. All four of them knew each other growing up, and sometimes went on double dates prior to the couples getting married.
When Eva was 65 she got her first paying job, working at Hanover Pen, which was a pen factory. She loved it. Eva was a devout churchgoer. She never drank and as far as she knew, her kids never drank either, as they knew she would not approve. She strongly disliked smoking as well.
In her free time, she was known as being an expert piano player despite no formal training in it. She never learned to read music but could master a song simply by hearing it. In her later years, when she went to the local senior center she could frequently be found playing the piano. She often stated that she “enjoyed playing for the old people”, despite her being older than most of the other people.
Bud died in 1988. He is buried alongside his first wife. Following his death, Eva moved back to the Duck family farm where she resided with her youngest daughter. Eva died on April 22, 2006 at the age of 95. She is buried alongside her first husband, LaRue, at Rest Haven Cemetery in Hanover, PA.
