Castleton Corners resident Joseph Nasta Jr, 56, a Vietnam veteran, retired elevator mechanic and lifelong Staten Islander, died yesterday of heart failure in St. Vincent’s Hospital, West Brighton.
From 1968 to 1971, Mr. Nasta served as a radio operator with the U.S. Army, stationed in Vietnam.
After coming home, he returned to the job he’d held from the age of 17, maintaining elevators in public housing facilities in the five boroughs for the city Housing Authority. Mr. Nasta retired earlier this year.
As an elevator engineer, he was active in Local 237, City Employees Union.
Born in Elm Park, Mr. Nasta graduated from Port Richmond High School.
He moved to Port Richmond in 1972 , and settled in Castleton Corners in 1977.
Mr. Nasta was a Scoutmaster with Boy Scout Troop 791 in Elm Park.
Kevin Nasta described his father as a generous man.
“He was a very giving guy,” he said. “He was always there for his friends and family.”
Mr. Nasta was a member of the North Shore Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Vietnam Veterans of America.
He enjoyed traveling and had taken many trips to Costa Rica.
In addition to his son, Kevin, Mr. Nasta is survived by his son, Brian K; three sisters, Louise Lessica, Amelia Fittipaldi and Marie Muller, and four grandchildren.
The funeral will be Saturday from the Matthew Funeral Home, Willowbrook, with a mass at 10 a.m. in St. Roch’s R.C. Church, Port Richmond. Burial will follow in St. Peter’s Cemetery, West Brighton.
